Copper Care Guide

Caring for Your Copper Jewelry

Copper is a living metal — it develops a natural patina over time that tells the story of your journey. At Ember & Ore, we believe this evolution is part of the beauty. Here's how to keep your pieces looking their best.

Why Copper Changes Color

Copper naturally oxidizes when exposed to air, moisture, and the oils in your skin. This creates a beautiful patina ranging from warm amber to deep brown and even green. Many of our customers love this natural aging process — but if you prefer the bright, polished copper look, follow the tips below.

Daily Care Tips

  • Remove your copper jewelry before swimming, bathing, or washing hands.
  • Avoid contact with lotions, perfumes, and cleaning products.
  • Pat dry immediately if your jewelry gets wet.
  • Store in the included pouch or a dry, airtight container when not wearing.

Cleaning Your Copper

The easiest way to restore shine to your copper jewelry is with items you already have at home:

  • Salt & Lemon Method: Sprinkle a pinch of salt on half a lemon and gently rub your copper piece. Rinse with warm water and dry thoroughly.
  • Ketchup Method: Apply a small amount of ketchup, let sit for 5–10 minutes, then rinse and dry.
  • Baking Soda Paste: Mix baking soda with a few drops of water to form a paste. Gently rub onto the copper, rinse, and dry.

Copper & Your Skin

Some people experience a green tint on their skin from copper jewelry — this is completely harmless and is simply a reaction between the copper and your skin's natural chemistry. It washes off easily with soap and water. To minimize this, keep your jewelry dry and clean it regularly.

Long-Term Storage

If storing for an extended period, place your piece in an airtight zip-lock bag with a small anti-tarnish strip. This slows the oxidation process and keeps your jewelry looking beautiful until you're ready to wear it again.
